THE CLIMBS The quarry is a small
watery bay cut into the hillside. At the very far left is a wall which gives
an exciting traverse (the Bigger Splash, 4c. D. Jump andS. Metcalf, Oct.
1976). Probably better when the water level is down. At the far left of the
crag there is a bay at a higher level than the bottom of the main slab. There
is a large holly tree growing out of the crag here. To the left there
is an excellent steep smooth red wall that will provide a hard route or two. Then there is: 1 Fracas 7m VD Start at the bottom of a well-defined corner to the
left of the large holly tree. Layback up the rusty corner to the top. 2 Hullabaloo 15m VD The main slab is divided by a number of trees. Start
on the left side of the left section 5m right of a holly bush. Climb straight
up to a small tree and scramble up to the rock wall. Move right and ascend
with caution. Belay on the top (30m from ground). 3 Nameless 30m VS 4b A route has been made right of Hullabaloo but no
description, only the grade, is available. Presumably it goes over the
overlaps. 4 Red Slab 20m S Start at a pine tree in the centre of the lowest part
of the right hand section (to the right of a recent rock fall). Move over a
short wall then ascend bearing slightly right to finish under the leaning
blocks. Climb them with care going right, and move over loose ground for an
extra 10m to belay on the top. 5 Delicardo 15m S Start 5m right of Red Slab. Straight up for 3m and
then wander across the slab to the right to escape from the leaning blocks.
Finish at the far right-hand corner. 6 Easy Slab 15m D The slab to the right of the main face can be scrambled
on. Nothing above Diff. At the north end of the reservoir is a small overgrown quarry (457180) which might give a few routes (but probably won't). |
