SITUATION and CHARACTER

The Moat Climbing Wall in Leicester is located inside Moat Community College.  This is situated 500m NE of the London Road railway station, on the corner of Maidstone Road and Sparkenhoe Street.

The Wall is a corridor shape with climbs on both sides and ends.  Its surfaces are of breeze‑block with rock holds and concrete cracks for most of the wall and brick with chipped holds for the two bolted walls.  The wall is 6.8m high to the walkway at the top and offers about 85 square meters of climbing surface.  On the walkway there are top‑rope bars that cover all of the breeze‑block surfaces.  There is a small changing area from which the walkway can be reached by a fixed ladder.

Groups (see later) are advised to limit their numbers to 20 since the floor area is quite small and the ventilation is poor.

APPROACH and ACCESS

When approaching by car head for the city centre until the inner ring road is reached.  Then follow the ring road clockwise if approaching from the N (or anti‑clockwise if approaching from the S) until the Swain Street traffic lights are reached.  These are opposite the Leicester Mercury building with its digital clock and thermometer.  Turn left if going clockwise (right for anti‑clockwise route) at these traffic lights and go over the Swain Street bridge (the railway) on to Sparkenhoe Street.  Take the first left on to Maidstone Road and first left again for the College car park.  The wall is located in a separate locked room inside the College, next to the sports hall.

Because of regular block bookings the Wall is rarely available in the evenings from Monday to Thursday .

BOOKING

The wall is operated on a booking system based on 90 minute sessions.  From Monday to Friday the wall is open from 9.00 am to 9.00 pm during school terms and from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm out of school terms.  The wall may be available for booking on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm if there are sufficient bookings to cover costs.  To book the hall, users should phone 0533‑625705 or write, Moat Community College, Maidstone Road, Leicester, LE2 0TU.

The wall is only hired to groups (min. 2 people) who Affiliate to the College (current fee £20.00 per group).  The cost of booking the wall for a 90 minute session during the 1991‑92 school year was £4.00 (School or Youth groups) and £5.50 (Adult groups).  Groups that want to make regular bookings should contact the College for details.
